Under the Influence of Interactive Communications

I cannot believe I yawned! I was “under the influence” of a small change in the environment. Communication to me is any way that verbal or non verbal interaction is conducted.  Initially, I was curious how Interactive Communications is defined because I was constantly being asked what my program was all about. There are several instances where communication is altered, enhanced, or diminished.  Why?  Because the ability to have more interactive communication has changed over the years, this has resulted in altered societal views of interaction dramatically.  I say that communication is verbal or non verbal based on what you see, hear and feel.  I believe that now we have audio, as we just listened to a lecture online, we have the everyday interactive communication by watching game shows or reality shows or meetings. In addition to communication, “technology” on the other hand I define by communication advances, whether it be tangible or intangible. Technologies are forever changing, and as stated in the lecture we have steered away from cds, vhs ect.  I felt pretty outdated when I went into Blockbuster and asked where all their tapes were and the girl kind of laughed at me and said, “We haven’t had vhs for years?”  I was shocked that I was only 22 and already experiencing dramatic technological advances first hand, and being that I always assumed I was up to date with advancements, it was clear that I was hiding under a rock for the last 4 years of college!

As Bush stated. “To make the record, we now push a pencil or tap a typewriter. Then comes the process of digestion and correction, followed by an intricate process of typesetting, printing, and distribution. To consider the first stage of the procedure, will the author of the future cease writing by hand or typewriter and talk directly to the record? He does so indirectly, by talking to a stenographer or a wax cylinder; but the elements are all present if he wishes to have his talk directly produce a typed record” Here we can see that there have been advancements that to him were so futuristic, but today is old news and we are looking for the next advancement.  Today, there are technologies that are far more advanced than just a simple audio clip.  Now there are ways to have devices attached to the brains of quadriplegics where all they do is simply think and the machine can draw and say what exactly their thoughts bring. In addition to that I found a way that this has been implemented in Canada’s healthcare system to help disabled children. And this brings me to Licklidder’s article that discusses how computers are communication devices.  There is no doubt that communication becomes more effective with computer advancements and it is with good reason to say so.  Without this communication tool most important issues could not be attended to or solved.  When used correctly the computer is an effective way to communicate issues ideas and concerns to a public or private party.  For instance, without this effective communicator global expansions of companies would not be a possibility, the knowledge that we have because of the internet of global and national concerns are solely based on accessibility and availability of fast information.  But then we have to think, is face to face communication becoming less affective or less habitual because of these advancements? Lets take a closer look at man computer symbiosis, which is not only pressuring our dependence on these advancements.  I am only 22 but I grew up learning how to use a computer and only became “addicted” at 13.  There are a lot of scary dependencies that machines have caused for our society, online shopping, online gambling, online chat rooms, online pornography. And on the other hand it has launched our society and community into a new way of communicating and assisting us in our every day lives.  I don’t know where I would be without my computer, blackberry and ability to access all of my friends any time of the day.

In conclusion, what I find to be most interesting is that interactive communications has something to do with interrelating the past, present and future. The past we have learned from, the present we are researching and conducting experiments in how to advance ourselves for the future.  It is exciting to think about what the future may hold.
